Comments on rough cut
We are reasonably pleased with our rough cut although we feel we have left out a lot of clips and sounds which we will film on the next filming session we have. Also when we have uploaded our rough cut it has been darkened and does not seem to be the same as when we made it.

Improvements/Changes:
  • begin with panning shot of warehouse
  • photo shop muzzle flash
  • shot of Shadow unit regrouping with sniper
  • close up of Shadow unit footsteps
  • slow/-motion - Fast motion cuts
  • new shoot of running into smoke
  • gun shot sounds
  • more Manley sounds of terrorists dying
  • filler- views of terrorists, moving into ambush
  • voice over radios

Mood board / Ideas
Part of the art director's job is to research and find images that help explain the desired feel of the production. Our aim is to achieve dark, stealthy feel, as this would fit in with conventions of the war film genre.

Many factors need to be thought about when trying to achieve this; the weather for example can change the mood of a production completely, and we think that filming on an overcast day would be very effective. Overcast weather lowers everybody's moods, thus making the production seem more serious. Below is an example image of a sky that would be appropriate to our genre and help when filming. (image from Google images).

As well as this, we can manipulate the footage, so that it appears desaturated; making the colours more dull. This effect can be seen on films such as 'Saving Private Ryan'. This is effective in that it can change the audience's whole perception of a production, whilst maintaining a realistic feel (reminiscent of the time it is supposed to be set in).
Below is a still from the 1998 war film, 'Saving Private Ryan'. It appears to have a blue/green tint to it, and all vivid colours appear to have been removed. This is effective as bright colours tend to give a film an uplifting and light tone, whereas removing them tends to give it a moody feel. (image from Google images).

We also need to look at costumes, for both the 'good guys' and the terrorists.
The 'good guys' will be dressed in dark clothing, with masks on to conceal their identity.
Below is an example image of the same sort of look we would like to achieve of the 'good guys' in our production.

-> Masks
-> Dark clothing, preferably black
-> Weapons (imitation)

At first glance they will look like this; dark clothing with weapons (empty paintball guns for our sequence), and they will have a confident appearance, much like the SAS soldiers seen in the image. Protection may also be on display.(Google images).

The terrorists will look very similar to the 'good guys', but with a slight difference.

-> Balaclavas
-> Dark clothing
-> Weapons (imitation)

Costumes / Props
When filming our piece, we thought that displaying genre conventions in the costumes would be very effective. As we are creating a war film, we knew that certain clothing and props would set the scene more than others.

Below is a list of costumes and props that we intend to use in our piece;

->Balaclavas
->Paintball guns (to replicate real guns)
->Paintball masks for 'good guys'
->Dark clothing and/or camo gear - for both good guys and bad guys
->Black hoodies for 'good guys'

These items follow the war film genre and they are conventions that cannot really be confused with any other genre of film. Using these props and costuming will hopefully make it obvious to the audience of the genre we intend to represent.

Micro features:
Camerawork:

We will be doing mixed shots which involve fast and slow motion to show the stealth clips of this film. We will also keep a lot of these shots involving the guns kept at a diagonal angle to show the face of the soldier and to show the gun they are wielding.

initial idea
our initial idea for this film extract was to do a war/action film based around 4 hero characters who infiltrate a terrorist position, free hostages and then get to the objective.
